Hoover Dam’s 75th Anniversary History Symposium

Abstract Deadline: December 16, 2009

The 75th anniversary of the completion of Hoover Dam’s construction will be celebrated with a moderated history symposium in Las Vegas on Thursday and Friday, preceded on Wednesday afternoon (October 20th) by a half-day tour of Hoover Dam, ASCE’s Monument of the Millennium dam.  The HHC’s history symposium tracks will be held at Bally’s Las Vegas on Thursday afternoon and Friday, October 21 and 22, 2010.  The engineering associated with the design and construction of Hoover Dam, its performance over the last 75 years, and the lessons learned will be the theme of this history symposium.  A variety of potential topics for papers to be included in the proceedings and potentially presented during the history symposium are provided below.

The papers accepted for the Hoover Dam 75th Anniversary History Symposium will be published by ASCE in a proceedings, which will be given out to symposium attendees.  The proceedings (in black and white) will follow the process developed by ASCE’s Geo-Institute for Geotechnical Practice Publications (GPP), which uses an appropriately short timeline and a simplified review process.  

Individuals wishing to present a contribution at the history symposium are invited to submit an abstract (Microsoft Word or PDF format) related to the history symposium’s engineering topics associated with Hoover Dam.

Potential engineering topics for papers include, but are not limited to, the following:

•    Damsite investigations and engineering geology
•    Colorado River basin hydrology
•    Analyses of dam and appurtenant structures
•    Modeling of dam and appurtenant structures
•    Instrumentation
•    Construction of dam and appurtenant structures
•    Construction management of a mega project
•    Concrete technology
•    Hydraulic technology
•    Power plant technology
•    Architectural features
•    Lessons learned from Hoover Dam and Boulder Canyon Project
•    Performance of dam and appurtenant structures during last 75 years
•    Performance of Lake Mead
•    Risk management for Hoover Dam
•    Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge
 

Due Dates:
The HHC requests that individuals interested in preparing and/or presenting a paper submit a brief (approximately 200 words) abstract for review.  Please email your abstract as text within the body of the email to the Symposium Organizer (Richard Wiltshire) no later than December 16, 2009, for review and possible acceptance.  With the abstract, please indicate your name, your daytime telephone number, and your return email address.  This abstract is for informal HHC review, not for publication.  Selected authors will be notified by January 13, 2010, and will be given a set of simple guidelines and a template for developing an electronic version of the paper.  An electronic draft of the paper is due by April 14, 2010, for review by the HHC.  Review comments on the draft paper will be provided to the author by May 14, 2010.  The revised electronic copy of the final paper is due by June 16, 2010.  Up to twelve of the published papers may be chosen to be presented at the symposium.  Individuals presenting their paper should prepare a PowerPoint presentation and plan to speak for 20 to 30 minutes.
