Land Retirement in the San Joaquin Valley

October 5th, 2007   (284 views )

Looking northwest, about 20 miles southeast of Mendota
Looking west over what was Broadview Water District

From a recent (9/25/07)aerial tour of the western San JoaquLooking north, between Los Banos and Firebaugh – Grassland Wetland on the rightin Valley, the extent of land retirement was evident and striking. At a time when crops would otherwise be growing and ready for harvest, much of the land is bare. What is seen in the accompanying photos is due in large part to the Westlands Water District land
acquisition program
through which irrigable lands are purchased and water supply to those lands is re-allocated throughout the District. This program has been in place since the early part of the decade and to date over 100,000 acres of irrigated lands, including the former Broadview Water District and other drainage-impaired and low productivity areas, have been taken out of production.

There are still many acres of crops grown in the west side of the valley, as can be seen in some photos; and some lands fallow now will have winter vegetables or wheat planted later this year.

Gianeli Pumping Plant and California Aqueduct

Also evident from the tour was the far-reaching network of water distribution features - reservoirs, pumps, and canals - stretching throughout the Valley.O'Neil Forebay

California Water Policy Conference 2007

October 3rd, 2007   (271 views )

The California Water Policy Conference, Climate Change: From Sizzle to Substance, will be held November 14-15 at the Sheraton Los Angeles Downtown Hotel.  This year the conference will examine the critical link between climate change and water resources. Evidence is growing that the earth’s climate will become warmer in the 21st century, which raises several questions:

  • What impacts will climate change have on our water supply, quality, infrastructure and institutions?
  • What are the challenges and opportunities?
  • Are local, state and federal agencies up to the challenge?
  • What should we be doing now to prepare?
