From a recent (9/25/07)aerial tour of the western San Joaqu
in Valley, the extent of land retirement was evident and striking. At a time when crops would otherwise be growing and ready for harvest, much of the land is bare. What is seen in the accompanying photos is due in large part to the Westlands Water District land
acquisition program through which irrigable lands are purchased and water supply to those lands is re-allocated throughout the District. This program has been in place since the early part of the decade and to date over 100,000 acres of irrigated lands, including the former Broadview Water District and other drainage-impaired and low productivity areas, have been taken out of production.
There are still many acres of crops grown in the west side of the valley, as can be seen in some photos; and some lands fallow now will have winter vegetables or wheat planted later this year.

Also evident from the tour was the far-reaching network of water distribution features - reservoirs, pumps, and canals - stretching throughout the Valley.
