Fish Passage Design and Implementation Workshops

The Salmonid Restoration Federation will offer two intensive workshops for engineers, hydrologists, biologists, environmental planners, and other staff who are involved in the design and implementation of fish passage projects.  The workshop will cover the design and implementation process, including biological considerations, site surveys and geomorphic assessment, state and federal fish passage design guidance, stream simulation design, grade control techniques, retrofitting existing crossings, contracting and implementation, monitoring and adaptation.

They will take place November 7-9 in Santa Cruz and November 13-15 in Santa Rosa.

UC Davis captive breeding program attempts to save Delta smelt

The Delta smelt captive-breeding program at UC Davis' Fish Conservation and Culture Laboratory will begin a species rescue program in case the fish goes extinct in the wild.  The lab has been breeding the smelt for 15 years for breeding purposes, but the decision to work with the state and find funding for a rescue program was made in recent weeks.  Read the whole Sacramento Bee article for all the details.

The North Coast Integrated Regional Water Management Plan Conference will be held October 10-12 in Fortuna, CA.

The North Coast IRWMP conference is an opportunity for partners and stakeholders to participate in the planning process, and to:

  •     receive updates on the current state of the North Coast IRWM plan, process and projects
  •     learn about new approaches and opportunities in watershed and integrated planning
  •     provide input to the North Coast Integrated Regional Water Management Plan and the California Water Plan
  •     hear about future funding opportunities
  •     learn about innovative technical methods for watershed planning
  •     review and consider options for integrating economic development, energy, climate change, and land use issues with local     and regional plans
  •     network with local, regional and statewide officials and stakeholders

2008 Request for Research Proposals: UC Center for Water Resources

The UC Center for Water Resources invites submission of research proposals for consideration of funding beginning on July 1, 2008. The request for proposals includes three separate programs of different emphasis:

  • Water Resources Research Program
  • Salinity/Drainage Program
  • Irrigation Management Program (Prosser Trust)

Projects are awarded on the basis of technical merits, relevance to issues in California, and availability of funds.

2007 Riparian Habitat Joint Venture Conference

The 2007 Riparian Habitat Joint Venture Conference will take place on December 4-6 at the Radisson Hotel in Sacramento. 

This 2 1/2 day symposium will feature a plenary session, concurrent sessions, and a poster session focused on the research, management, collaboration, and issues facing California to both prevent and manage floods and conserve, protect, and restore riparian habitat across the State.  Major themes of the 2007 symposium include flood control and protection; habitat, species, and natural community conservation; protecting and sustaining agriculture; and the health and safety of urban communities.

State of the Estuary Conference

The American Water Resources Association is holding its 2008 Spring Specialty Conference, GIS and Water Resources V in San Mateo, CA next March and you can be a part of it.  Abstracts must be submitted by October 29, 2007 to be considered. 

If accepted, your oral presentation that will be published in the Conference Proceedings, or present a poster in a gallery at the conference and in a virtual gallery on the proceedings DVD. There will be an opportunity to present your freeware and public domain scripts on a Conference server so that other attendees can download them as well as learning about them in your Conference papers.
