MIT Press ebooks in computer science and engineering via IEEE Xplore

The MIT Press eBooks Library: The Computing & Engineering Collection is now available via IEEE Xplore. The collection includes more than 450 titles from 1943 to the present in the fields of computer science and engineering technologies, including artificial intelligence, information theory, computer programming, information technology, and electrical engineering.

Links to individual ebooks will eventually appear in OskiCat and Melvyl.

Library website downtime June 1

Due to needed maintenance, the Library website will be unavailable for up to 1-3 hours starting at 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 1. OskiCat, Melvyl, article databases, digital collections, and the proxy server will still be available.

Embase Classic (1947-1973 citations) Now Available

We are happy to announce that the library now provides access to Embase Classic, consisting of over 1.8 million older (1947-1973; a small number of pre-1947 citations are also included) citations in Embase. All Embase searches will automatically include these older citations, as well as the 1974 to present citations, unless you specifically exclude them, which can be done in 2 ways:

Adding a date range limit to your search;
UN-checking "Embase Classic" on the advanced search screen

Embase, including Embase Classic, is a primary resources for evidence-based medical research. Coverage is especially strong in drug, pharmaceutical, and toxicological research including economic evaluations. San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment

ScienceInsider has an interesting article about the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) posted online today. The declaration recommends that institutions and agencies "not use journal-based metrics, such as Journal Impact Factors, as a surrogate measure of the quality of individual research articles, to assess an individual scientist's contributions, or in hiring, promotion, or funding decisions." The declaration also has specific recommendations for funding agencies, institutions, publishers, organizations that supply metrics, and researchers.

SIAM ebooks

SIAM ebooks are a great resource available to the UC Berkeley community. We have access to over 400 titles published from 1971-2013. They cover many areas of applied mathematics and computational science. New ebooks will be cataloged in OskiCat as they are published.

Zoology Online trial

Zoology Online is De Gruyter's online version of the Handbook of Zoology / Handbuch der Zoologie, a standard reference on animal systematics, morphology, physiology, behavior, and ecology. Material is updated regularly, and new entries continue to be added.

24 hour study space for RRR and Finals weeks

The Moffitt Library and Gardner (Main) Stacks will remain open continuously for a 24-hour study hall beginning at 8 a.m. on Monday, May 6 and ending at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 17. The Moffitt Microcomputer Lab and the Free Speech Movement Café will also be open round the clock for that period.

The science and engineering libraries will maintain their normal hours during finals. For current schedules of all campus libraries, see our Library Hours.

Meteorological & Geoastrophysical Abstracts

The Library has decided to license Meteorological & Geoastrophysical Abstracts (MGA) for a one-year pilot. MGA is a database produced by the American Meteorological Society that includes citations and abstracts for journal articles, conference papers, books, and technical reports on meteorology, climatology, atmospheric chemistry and physics, glaciology, and more. Coverage is from 1974 to the present and about 850 new records are added every month.

Use the proxy server or VPN to access MGA off-campus. Use UC-eLinks to get full text of articles.
