Humana Press, publishers of BioMedProtocols and numerous molecular biology journals, was acquired by Springer, and Humana's digital content is migrating to the Springer site. BioMedProtocols is now availabe as Springer Protocols. Springer Protocols, a protocol database of more than 18,000 searchable protocols in molecular biology and biomedience includes protocols from the series Methods in Molecular Biology, Methods in Molecular Medicine, Methods in Biotechnology, Neuromethods, and other sources. The new interface for Springer Protocols features commenting, video protocols, and the ability to upload protocols.
Several libraries will be offering workshops on EndNote, RefWorks and other interesting topics in April.
EndNote
EndNote is a powerful, full-featured program that works with many databases to organize references, format a bibliography, and insert citations. EndNote may be purchased from The Scholar's Workstation and other vendors. Recommended to those managing extensive bibliographies.
RefWorks
RefWorks is an online program licensed by the libraries for use by UC Berkeley students, faculty and staff. It works with many databases to organize references, format a bibliography, and insert citations.
Google Scholar
Google Scholar is a search engine for online scholarly material, powered by the same technology as the Google web search. Learn how the Library collaborates with Google Scholar to bring you scholarly articles and other materials for your research on any topic.
Electronic Books on Public Health Topics
Thousands of online books are available for your use, including many core reference titles. Learn about e-book collections in public health and medicine.
The libraries will have reduced hours during Spring Recess, March 22-30 (pdf). The libraries will be closed on Friday, March 28 for the Cesar Chavez Holiday.
Yesterday, Wired published a photo essay called The Internet Archive Keeps Book-Scanning Free. The photo essay provides an interesting view of the process used to scan public-domain books at the University of California's Northern Regional Library Facility (NRLF).
Books scanned at NRLF are added to the University of California Libraries collection on the Internet Archive. Currently, this includes over 140,000 free books from UC libraries.
The following UC Berkeley web services will be unavailable from 5:00 p.m. to midnight on Friday, March 21 due to necessary software maintenance:
» Library websites
» Library hours & locations
» Search the Library Web
» Historic topographic maps and other digital collections
» Library blogs and wikis
The Pathfinder and Melvyl catalogs will still be available, as will our electronic journals and databases.
The Physics-Astronomy Library will open at 8 a.m. on Monday, March 17 in 351 LeConte Hall. The library's new hours are:
Mon-Thu: 8 a.m.-6 p.m.
Fri: 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Please come and see the newly renovated library.

IEEE Xplore will be unavailable for approximately 4 hours starting at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 15 due to routine maintenance. IEEE Xplore provides access to journals, conferences, and standards published by IEEE and IET.
CiteSeerX, a new version of the popular CiteSeer search engine, has officially launched. CiteSeerX "is a scientific literature digital library and search engine that focuses primarily on the literature in computer and information science." The system indexes full-text computer science articles, papers, and technical reports that are freely available on the web.

This "next generation CiteSeer" has a more intuitive interface, a faster and more effective search, and an expanded collection. From their blog post:
At the time of this writing, we have extended the size of our collection to approximately 810K documents and over 14 million citations. This represents over 200K more unique documents than can be found in the legacy system, since we filtered out about 150K duplicate records during the conversion process. Our crawlers have been working hard to scour the web for new content, and we currently have half a million more PDF and PostScript files queued for ingestion.
Recently, we added online access to our subscriptions for the journals of the American Statistical Association (ASA). Archival issues have been available online via JSTOR for some time, but this change to our subscription gives us access to current issues online too.
Find these electronic journals and more with the library's list of Electronic Journals A-Z.
UC campuses now have access to the Physics Today Archive online, providing full-text access from 1985 to all but the most recent 12 months. AIP plans to digitize all issues back to the magazine's launch in 1948, eventually creating a complete archive. Find this electronic journal and more with the library's list of Electronic Journals A-Z.
Current contents remain a benefit to member subscribers only. You can access print issues from the current year in the Physics-Astronomy Library (when it reopens in LeConte, that is).

The campus now has online trial access for ChemSusChem for 2008. ChemSusChem is a new journal from Wiley on chemistry and sustainability, energy and materials. ChemSusChem is published on behalf of the Editorial Union of Chemical Societies (EUChemSoc). Founding societies are the Società Chimica Italiana and the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh). The journal is supported by the Asian Chemical Editorial Society (ACES). Off campus access is through the library proxy server or the campus VPN service.
