SciFinder Scholar 2007 release

The SciFinder Scholar 2007 client software is now available for both PC and Mac OSX users. UCB students, faculty and staff can download the software at the UC distribution site. Remember that PC users have two files to download, the SciFinder Scholar file and the site.prf file. There is only one file for Mac OSX users.

SciFinder Scholar provides online access to several databases, including Chemical Abstracts, Registry, CASREACT, CHEMLIST, CHEMCAT, and MEDLINE.

What’s New in SciFinder Scholar 2007:

  • Categorize a reference answer set by subject categories and substances into order to create a histogram for easy analysis.
  • Combine a current answer set with a saved answer set of the same type: reference, substance, or reaction.
  • Launch a new structure search or refine a current structure search by clicking on any structure in an answer set
  • Export Commercial Chemicals records into Microsoft Excel
  • Print substance answers in a 1-4 column grid.

Off-campus access to SciFinder Scholar and the UC software distribution site for the SciFinder Scholar 2007 client is available if you use the campus Virtual Private Network (VPN) service. You cannot use the library's proxy server to access these resources.

Biographical Memoirs free online

The National Academy of Sciences recently announced that it "will publish its entire collection of Biographical Memoirs online. Although memoirs published since 1995 have been freely available online, over 900 memoirs published prior to 1995 were available previously only through archives and libraries." The online collection will eventually include all the memoirs back to 1877.

Biographical Memoirs provide biographies of deceased members of the National Academy of Sciences. These biographies (in PDF) include Melvin Calvin, William Campbell, Griffith Evans, Joel Hildebrand, W. F. Giauque, Gilbert Lewis, Glenn Seaborg, and many more.

The print version is available at Q141.N2 in the Doe Library.

RSS alerts in CSA databases

CSA recently released a new customization and alerts service called My Research. This service allows you to quickly set up alerts, create lists of preferred databases, and customize your search results display. With this new service, you can also choose to receive your alerts by e-mail or RSS.

CSA alerts enable you to create a search to be run automatically as new records are added to their databases, with the results sent to your e-mail address or RSS reader. CSA databases include Earthquake Engineering Abstracts, Engineered Materials Abstracts, Environmental Sciences & Pollution Management, GeoRef, Metadex, and PsycINFO. Watch the quick demo for more information.

Most article databases offer e-mail alerts, and RSS alerts are also available from BIOSIS, Compendex, PubMed, Web of Science, and Zoological Record. For more information, visit our guides on Keeping Up-to-date in the Biological Sciences and Keeping Current in engineering.

New records on hold in Melvyl

Melvyl, the catalog of the UC Libraries, is currently undergoing a software upgrade. Due to the upgrade process, new campus records have been on hold since August 8. This freeze will continue until late September or early October.

During this period, you will be unable to discover new books, journals, and electronic resources from UC campuses in Melvyl. These new records will be loaded into Melvyl after the software upgrade is complete. In the meantime, you can discover our new acquisitions by searching Pathfinder.

Note: Pathfinder includes most of the UC Berkeley science and engineering libraries, but does not include affiliated libraries such as the Earthquake Engineering Research Center Library, the Transportation Library, and the Water Resources Center Archives.
