TOXMAP: More data, improved interface

TOXMAP is a Geographic Information System from the Division of Specialized Information Services of the US National Library of Medicine that uses maps of the United States to help users visually explore data from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) and Superfund Program.

TOXMAP now includes several interface improvements, updated mortality data, and names and locations of hospitals when the map is zoomed to the most detailed level. Hospital and other reference data can be hidden from maps via the "Reference Data" link.

Other recent changes include:

  • Ability to view TRI facilities reporting releases in a particular TRI year
  • Inclusion of links to TRI state fact sheets from EPA
  • Ability to zoom to US national parks via "Zoom to a Place"
  • Ability to toggle on and off the "auto-zoom" behavior in the main Search page
  • Section 508 compliance improvements

New and Updated EndNote Filters

Do you use EndNote? If so, you should download these new or updated EndNote filters, available at the EndNote web site. EndNote filters "read" your database search results files in order for the references to import successfully. You need to save the new filters in the Filters folder, typically located in C\Program Files\EndNote [version]\.

If you have any problems, please contact a reference librarian at the Public Health Library.

The new/updated filters (with the database vendor and date of creation or update) are:

Academic Search Premier (EBSCO) 8/28/2008

Premier Business Source (EBSCO; aka Business Source Premier) 8/28/2008

CAB Abstracts (EBSCO; Use this filter for the new Global Health database) 8/28/2008

Library Catalog (University of California; aka Melvyl) 8/18/2008

Social Work Abstracts (SilverPlatter) 6/30/2008

To use the web version, you must register to establish your own userid and password, but you don’t need to download any client software. For off-campus access, you can use the library proxy server or the campus VPN. The client version will also continue to be supported. One plus with the web version is that you can set up current awareness searches, which SciFinder calls "Keep Me Posted." Instructions for UCB registration are here. After you register and have your userid and password, you can go directly to the web version.
