Emerging themes - tag clouds

At the Town Hall Meeting on Dec. 4, 2007, we looked at a hierarchy of emerging themes that were gathered from all of the blog posts for New Directions. Another way of gathering this information and creating a more Web 2.0 dynamic with this blog is to add a tagging and tag cloud plug-in -  which it looks like b2evolution offers.

This feature allows users to tag - describe with keywords - their posting. Then those tags are pulled together into a cloud on a sidebar. The nice thing about a tag cloud is that it visually represents all of the topics everyone is interested in. Topics that have more tags are in a larger and bolder font than less used tags. So if the term 'training' is used more than any other tag, it would be the boldest and is easily identified as a strongly potential area to move forward in.

A good example of this is on The Vital Library blog:

Even though I am a serious gardener who values trellises, I really do agree with this suggestion. Tag clouds really are the better tool to begin to organize this kind of discussion. Tags are automatically fair and democratic.

This is a great suggestion and I hope we implement it. A lot of opinions and ideas are expressed in this Blog. This would be an excellent way to identify group concensus and identify priorities.

I agree -- this is a great idea and in line with the library 2.0 concept. Some libraries are beginning to use social bookmarking for reference. There was a preconference on this at Internet Librarian 2007 - see the link above.
