EVCP Breslauer's observation that "...comprehensive collecting for every university is a thing of the past. ..." suggests to me that UC librarians need to proactively and radically re-think the models and support structures we have cultivated and become attached to in the past, over time, and into the present.

Shouldn't we be envisioning new structures and alliances in order to provide comprehensive access to UC collections (v. UC Berkeley collections, UCLA collections, UCSF collections, etc.)? Shouldn't we think more about system wide collections instead of campus-based collections?

What opportunities exist out there for centralizing/consolidating collection building, collection processing, collection preservation, as well as the development of systems capable of providing access based on academic and research disciplines and not campus location?
