New librarian: Edna Lewis

I have been working on the reference staff at the law school (an excellent bunch by the way) since the fall of 2006 when I interned as part of my SJSU SLIS program. Before that I spent a year working part-time at Hastings Law School during their law school renovation.

In a former life I was a corporate attorney at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe for 10 years (J.D. University of Chicago law school) and then spent a number of years in the trenches with my 3 kids (if you can survive that everything else is a piece of cake).

It is great to be working at the law library at UC Berkeley -- terrific staff, students and faculty.

not old librarian intro: I-Wei Wang

Hello, world: I'm not a "new" librarian exactly, but not yet old, I guess, since I started after the last new Librarian Reception ("missed it by that much!"). I joined the Law Library as a reference librarian in January 2007 after receiving my MLIS from SJSU ... before that I went to Brown University (History and English Lit.) and Harvard Law School. And then there were the Lost Years, practicing law in San Francisco ... and before that, I grew up (not to say matured) in Palo Alto, where my parents worked at That Other University. Nice to be here!

Newish Librarian Introduction: Claude Potts

Ciao tutti,

I am the Romance Languages Librarian. I work in Doe/Moffitt's International & Area Studies department and my office is in Doe 212/218. Though I began here on April 2, 2007 and will soon be celebrating my two-year anniversary, I am still considered new. I suppose when I have had a chance to meet everyone in this vast library system and memorize all your names, I'll no longer feel like such a newbie.

Originally from Northern California, I previously worked at ASU Libraries as the Latin American & Iberian Studies Librarian. I obtained two graduate degrees at UCLA where I also worked for educational institutes like IDEA and Center X. Other libraries I've worked for include the Santa Monica Public Library and LC Rio's Field Office. I've been fortunate to have lived in France, Spain, Mexico and Brazil. Oh yes, my undergraduate degree is in Comparative Literature from Berkeley!

New librarian intro: Lisa Ngo

Hello everyone! I'm the instruction and electronic services librarian at the Engineering Library. When I'm not trying to decipher engineering jargon I serve as the Library Representative on the LAUC-B Executive Committee. Prior to starting here in August of 2007 I was working at King Library at San Jose State University. As a San Francisco native, I am really enjoying being back in the city (though not the commute that comes with it). Stop by and say hello if you find yourself up in this corner of campus!

New Librarian Introduction: David Eifler

I'm working 1/2 time as a Reference and Instruction Librarian in ENVI, the Environmental Design Library. I graduated from UCB's College of Environmental Design many years ago with a Masters in City and Regional Planning. You'll have to meet me to guess how many years ago it was. I'm also working as the training coordinator for the Millennium ILS, which is where you may have seen my name. I'm thrilled to be back at Cal, this time on the other side of the reference desk.

The Library Web Site of the Future

Submitted by: Margaret Phillips

As Vice-Chair/Chair Elect, I am a non-voting member of the Academic Senate Library Committee (LIBR). At the February meeting, one member of the committee brought to our attention the article, The Library Web Site of the Future (Inside Higher Ed, February 17, 2009). A discussion of the article will be on the agenda for the next meeting. If I understood what this particular member of the committee was driving at, it was the need for greater faculty input/collaboration in the library websites. In particular, I think it may have been the following statement from the article that seemed most to capture his perspective:

"The faculty is the catalyst in this transformation of the library portal concept. What they must do to accomplish this task is open the door to greater collaboration with academic librarians ... Working with academic librarians faculty can achieve both goals: creating greater e-resource awareness and shifting discovery paths from the mysterious bowels of the library portal to the more transparent course site."

I'm interested in what LAUC members think not only about this statement but other points made in the article.
