The California Department of Fish and Game has made the California Digital Atlas available online. The atlas is a powerful web GIS that allows users to explore and map various data layers for the state of California.
The data are wide ranging and include: environmental hazards, roads, jurisdictions, plans, projects, biodiversity, hydrology, physical geography, demographics, land ownership, land use/cover, and base maps.
The atlas is highly functional, including much of the functionality one would expect from a web GIS. Users can run queries, obtain information for various layers, zoom to coordinates, get coordinates from a graphic location, and search for a place name among other features.
A note: when you change layers or add features to a layer, make sure to click the "Click to refresh map" button on the top left of the screen near the Layer and Legend tabs. Otherwise, the layers will not be visible.
You can find out more about the atlas and related projects at the Internet Mapping Application Products and Solutions (IMAPS) site.
