Dibblee Geology Maps

Geolgy map of California

Searching for geologic maps of California? Interested in finding geology resources and maps? Take a look at the map series published by the Dibblee Geology Foundation, more commonly referred to as Dibblee maps.

Dibblee maps are renowned for their high quality and serve a diverse group of users such as engineering geologists, oil companies, U.S. Forest Service, environmentalists and students, among others. Each map also includes pertinent references and quadrangle location maps, indexes to adjacent 7.5 minute quadrangles, and indexes to sources of geology.

Thomas Wilson Dibblee, Jr. created a true California legacy with over 70 years of active geologic mapping. He mapped more than one fourth of the state of California. His knowledge of regional stratigraphy, structure, and paleontology were basic to understanding much of California's geology. During his distinguished career, Dibblee worked for the Richfield Oil Corportation, the USGS, and as a volunteer, working to map the entire Los Padres National Forest.

The Thomas Wilson Dibblee, Jr. Geological Foundation, a non-profit corporation founded to carry on Dibblee's mapping work, and the group responsible for publishing contemporary Dibblee maps, merged with the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History in 2002 to form the Dibblee Geology Center.

Dibblee maps are accessible through Pathfinder. The maps are most easily found by searching by subject: Geology California [County] Maps. The Dibblee Foundation has an online index for the currently available maps. You can then search Pathfinder by title: Geology [location from index map] quadrangle
