In 1996 Wendell received a distinguished service award for meeting cost saving targets by reducing operations costs and improving services. Wendell implemented a number of mail processing systems/ techniques which greatly improved the timely delivery of mail, efficiency of mail services, and resulted in cost savings for the library.

Beginning November 1, 2009, Susan Francisco, who manages Mail and Transportation Services for the Library, will assume responsibility for the daily mail room operations in addition to her other duties. My thanks to Susan for her adoption of these new responsibilities to provide continuity in communications with library staff, and to Wendell for his many years of service to the Library.

Charles Stewart has been a key member of the Library's photographic team and a specialist in preservation microfilming since 1978. A proponent of traditional wet photography for its unique advantages as a preservation tool, Charles developed methods for optimizing capture of difficult-to-image materials, including rare books and MSS, and developed a unique system using microfilm for copying photos in large numbers inexpensively. Charles brought recognition to the Preservation Department with his technical expertise by consulting with other preservation microfilming operations in the US and abroad and by producing technical reports for the preservation community. Among major career events, Charles remembers vividly his work to keep operations going during several Library construction projects by erecting camera operations under makeshift conditions in various library stacks and cubbyholes and, when need, by working in a hard hat! Charles's contributions have been many.

Begging November 1 Robert Byler in the Preservation Microfilming Lab will continue to provide as many of our preservation microfilming services as possible. Maxim Osinovsky will pick up some of Cam's duties by serving as deptartment office manager in addition to his ongoing assignment as unit head for the Preservation Replacement Division of the Department.

On behalf of the Preservation Department staff, congratulations and much appreciation to Cam and Charles for their non-stop contributions over decades, and many thanks to Max and Robert for stepping in behind them.

I am pleased to introduce the Cataloging Management Team, who will be working with me to plan, prioritize, and manage the activities of the Catalog department. This team includes:

Beginning November 1, 2009 Imani Abalos will serve as the operations manager of the Morrison Library in an interim arrangement, handling all issues related to the facility, collections, staffing, and policies. Also, as of October 1, 2009 Zsuzsu Listro has assumed responsibility for events scheduling in Morrison Library.

In the Newspaper/Microforms Library, Victoria Jourdan has announced her plans to retire as Operations Supervisor on October 31, 2009. Allan Urbanic will serve as the unit head for the Newspaper/Microform Library in an interim arrangement, handling issues related to the facility, collections, and policies. John Robinson has also been appointed to serve as operations manager and student supervisor.

We hope to have a permanent staffing arrangement for both Morrison and Newspaper/Microforms in place by May 2010.

Michel Foucault Collection

This is the most comprehensive collection to date of online audio recordings of lectures and courses by the renowned French philosopher and historian Michel Foucault. The English language collection features two lecture series--on Truth, Subjectivity, and Parrhesia--delivered at UC Berkeley in the 1980's. The French language collection offers five complete semester-length courses, covering such quintessentially Foucauldian topics as Parrhesia, governmentality, neoliberalism, security, biopolitics, and sovereignity. The collection includes recordings spanning two decades of thought and instruction, including Foucault's final 1984 course at the College de France.

All recordings can be accessed from the Michel Foucault Audio Archive: http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/MRC/foucault/mfaa.html. This collection was generously donated to the Media Resources Center by Paul Rabinow, Professor of Social Cultural Anthropology, and digitized and edited by Gisele Binder, Operations Supervisor, Media Resources Center.

UCB/Pacifica Radio Archives LGBT History Collection

In continuing partnership with the Pacifica Radio Archives, the Media Resources Center has digitized over 20 hours of programming related to LGBT history and culture that originally aired on Pacifica radio from 1958 to 1998. The digitized materials have been incorporated into a new MRC web site devoted to the project: http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/MRC/pacificalgbt/pacificalgbt2.html

The work of identifying, preserving, and digitizing materials in the Pacifica Archives was largely accomplished by Joe Gallucci, an intern in the NYU Moving Image Archiving and Preservation program. Over a ten week period, Joe worked with staff in both the Pacifica Archives and MRC to develop and implement this project.

In addition to his active role internationally in business librarianship, Milt has also served on the editorial review board of the Journal of Business and Finance Librarianship. He has done consulting and advisory work for several publishers, vendors, and libraries in recent years.

Business Library Acting Head Appointment

I am pleased to announce that Hilary Schiraldi has been appointed Acting Head of the Thomas J. Long Business Library effective Oct. 30, 2009, for an 18-month period. Hilary joined the UCB library staff in September 2008 as Reference, Instruction, and Data Librarian at the Long Library. She came to us after a three-year position as Information Research Associate at Credit Suisse Securities in New York City. Her previous work experience includes various research positions at R.L. Renck & Co., Forbes Magazine, and BT Alex Brown. She is a graduate of Columbia University and Pratt Institute. 

During the past year, Hilary has been actively involved in developing instructional opportunities for students in the Haas School and has been collaborating with several librarians from other subject libraries on interdisciplinary learning sessions. Please join me in welcoming Hilary to her new position.
