Librarian in Print

An article entitled "Views from the Edge: Commercial Sources for Video Weirdness and Ephemera" by Gary Handman has been published in the April 2008 issue of Against the Grain. The article discusses the cultural significance of movie marginalia such as exploitation films and B movies, and presents arguments for the importance of including these types of films in academic library collections. There is also a discussion of current acquisition sources for movie ephemera and marginalia.

Public Health Library Welcomes Anca Giurgiulescu

The Public Health Library is very pleased to welcome Anca Giurgiulescu as the new temporary LA II (Document Delivery Coordinator). For the past two and a half years, she was a library student employee in Moffitt Tech Services. She recently graduated this past May with a degree in Development Studies and has a strong interest in multi-disciplinary fields of studies. Specifically, she is interested in exploring options for working toward developing public health services and systems in French-speaking Africa. In addition, she looks forward to learning as much as she can about how public health and public policy decisions are researched and reached in California. She is considering a graduate program in Public Health sometime in the near future.

Project kick-off party, er, Early Bird was held June 5th at Alumni House with an overflow crowd of about 175 people attending. Of great interest was a 45 minute product demo given by Innovative's John McCullough. Library staff came away excited about the wide range of capabilities Millennium offers, and with a sense of how complex the migration is going to be. The Implementation Team started weekly meetings May 29th and will start regular meetings with Innovative's team in mid-June. This group's work is to coordinate configuration of the new system. Since that process is just getting started our most frequent answer to questions now is "we can't wait to find out too!" Library staff will have multiple opportunities to preview the system as various modules are prepared for going live, and to give feedback on many aspects of how the system will work and look over the coming year. Various units, councils, and groups are inviting me to have a discussion about their needs for a new system. The resulting lists of needs can be viewed on the wiki, as well as a schedule of upcoming sessions.
