Over ten years in the planning, Bancroft’s seismic retrofit and remodel have resulted in a beautiful and remarkable building. The work required to remove and return our collections to campus was equally remarkable. Library staff will discuss one of the most complex moves in the history of libraries, and talk about highlights of the "new" Bancroft.

"After nine years of planning and construction, and three years of exile off campus, on January 5th The Bancroft Library opened its doors again in the splendidly renovated Doe Annex Building, on the east side of the main library complex, facing the Campanile.

Bancroft is one of the great treasures of the Berkeley campus, a library even older than the university itself. It grew out of the reference collection that San Francisco book dealer and publisher Hubert Howe Bancroft began to form in 1860. Bancroft initially focused his collection on California in order to compile a guidebook for emigrants to the Golden State but soon expanded it to encompass the entire American West as well as Mexico and Central America." - Charles Faulhaber, Director of The Bancroft Library

UC Berkeley's Bancroft Library is a place where papyrus from ancient Egypt, pamphlets from the 1964 Free Speech Movement and photographs of the Gold Rush can all be found under one roof.

Now it's also one of the spiffiest spots at Cal.

The 149-year-old library - renowned worldwide for its collection of primary sources on the history of California and the American West - recently reopened after a huge renovation that displaced it from campus in summer 2005 and scattered it to five temporary locations.

"We are enormously pleased with the aesthetics of the building," said Bancroft Director Charles Faulhaber. "It works very well with the restrained Beaux-Arts exterior. The 42nd California International Antiquarian Book Fair will be held in San Francisco from Friday, February 13, 2009 through Sunday, February 15, 2009 at the Concourse Exhibition Center. Over 240 rare booksellers from the United States and around the world will be participating at the country’s largest antiquarian book fair.

Book lovers and collectors can find the world’s finest stocks of rare and antiquarian books, manuscripts and related materials priced from a few dollars to hundreds of thousands. The selection available includes early printed books and manuscripts, illustrated books, fine bindings, early American and European literature, modern first editions, children’s books, maps, autographs, ephemera, and antiquarian books on history, science, law, architecture, economics, gastronomy, wine and scores of other fields. Various seminars and exhibits will also be held.

Tickets are $10 per person and include return entry throughout the remainder of the fair.

The second biennial Codex International Book Fair will be taking place in the ASUC Pauley Ballroom on the campus of the University of California Berkeley. The ballroom is near the intersection of Telegraph Ave. and Bancroft way. The fair is rapidly becoming the “world’s fair” of the book as art and artifact. Over 110 artists from around the globe will be exhibiting what amounts to “a staggering panopoly of riches.”

Admission to the CODEX book fair is $15 for a three day ticket and $10 for one day. Admission for students (with ID) is $5.
